Referencing guide: AI use

Using AI tools

How do I cite and reference AI tools used in an assessment?

If you use a Generative AI tool to create something under the approved usage, you will need to show evidence of where it came from.

It might appear as an Appendix to an assessment.

If you explain it in text in an Assessment, you will need to cite and reference the software used and the output generated by the AI tool.

Here are examples of when you would cite Generative AI.

1. Cite and reference the chatbot and Large Language Model used to create something.

2.   a) Cite and reference the output you created, which is stored as an output as a recoverable item on a network location.

      b) The output might not be recoverable in all cases, in which case you might treat it only as a personal communication.

3. Cite an AI-generated output created by a third party. Create a reference for this item based on the format where it was included, journal article, web page, blog post, etc.
