Applying the APA guidelines
APA is a great referencing style to use because so much guidance is provided online. We encourage you to search the APA website and style blog to help make decisions about formatting of sources you use.
Relevant examples won't always be given so, quite often, you may need to combine guidelines for different sources, to 'mash up' a format that works for your source. You can read about this in the APA blog: https://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/2010/02/the-frankenreference.html. Consistent formatting is recommended.
Clinical practice sources
APA website provides specific guidelines for a range of clinical practice sources, including UpToDate and Cochrane Reviews: apastyle.apa.org/style-grammar-guidelines/references/examples/clinical-practice-references
Look through these to guide your application to other clinical sources you use in your studies with University of Tasmania too. We've created some referencing examples for specialised health sources that we're often asked about, and recommend you follow these formats.
Reference List setup
Some courses and schools may require use of the APA style guide for formatting your assignments. Refer to your unit outline and MyLO units to confirm requirements.
Please note that reference examples in this guide have not followed the APA style and do not show the hanging indents.
