eBooks at UTAS Library

eBooks and the Library

Why the library can't always get an eBook

Not all eBooks are available for libraries to buy. It depends on how publishers license their books.

  • Individual license – only allows one person to buy and read the book. Libraries cannot use these.
  • Institutional license – allows many people to access the book at the same time. The library can buy this type.

Unfortunately, not all textbooks are released with an institutional license. If that's the case, we’ll make the print version available instead.

What happens if no eBook is available?

If we can’t get an eBook, a print copy will be added to the Library Reserve. These books are in high demand, so they usually have a 7-day loan limit.

Some eBooks have access limits

Even if a book is available as an eBook, it may still have restrictions, such as:

  • A limit on the number of users who can read it at the same time
  • Restrictions on printing or copying
  • Short-term access that may expire in future semesters
Using read aloud with ProQuest eBooks

ProQuest Ebook Central supports read-aloud tools through Text Only Mode. This works best on a laptop or desktop, not mobile devices.

To turn it on:

  1. Go to the Settings menu and select Profile.
  2. Choose Enable Text Only Mode.
  3. Tick the box to agree to the terms of service.
  4. Click Save changes, then Continue.

You will also need a browser extension or software such as Read&Write installed on your device.

If you're having trouble accessing an eBook, library staff are happy to help.

Recommend an eBook for the library
  1. Go to the library catalogue.
  2. Ensure you're using the 'Everything' option when searching.
  3. Find the book you're interested in.
  4. Click 'Purchase Recommendation.'
  5. Follow the prompts to complete the form.
  6. Submit your recommendation.

Alternatively, email us at library.resources@utas.edu.au. Please include as much information about the book as you can.
