 1. Is it relevant?

  • Check out the Title of the Article and Abstract of the records in your search results list
to quickly evaluate whether the article is relevant to your topic..

 2. Read strategically

  • To quickly find the main idea / claim / argument, try reading a journal article in the following order:

1.  Article Title
2.  Abstract
3.  Conclusion
4.  Results / Findings

 3. Don't sweat the jargon

  • Every discipline has its own language. Use a subject specific dictionary to look up meanings
you don't understand. Sometimes you can pick up the main idea without getting into the nitty gritty.
  • Add the language used in the article to your list of keywords for searching, to find more articles on the topic

 4. Skim through the visuals in the article

  • Images, charts, graphs, tables are just another way used by authors to present additional information.

 5. Use one article to find others

  • Check out the Keywords provided by the author of the article
  • Scan the References / Reference List
  • Look out for the Find Similar / Find More Like This  feature sometimes provided by the search tool / database

You try!
