Once you have an overview of the ideas that relate to your topic, the next step is to become more focused & specific in the information you search for and read.

  • Focused Searching means you move to using more specialised search tools and search for terminology and concepts that relate specifically to the points you want to make.
  • Critical Reading is reading in-depth, with a purpose to gather pertinent literature as evidence to support your points / argument.
  • Taking good detailed Notes at this stage is very important.

Journal articles provide in-depth information about very specific ideas in a topic.

A sub-module in  MyLO: LIST

takes you through this process. It also includes how to use subject specific databases.

These days basic techniques for searching most databases are the same ie. you type your keywords into a search box; you can limit your searching by selecting different limiters; your search produces a results list for you to look through.

The following set of 4 short videos talk you through how to analyse and evaluate arguments, and other skills & techniques involved in

Note taking is a vital part of the Academic Reading & the Searching Process.

The purpose of taking notes is to:

1. Organise readings relevant to a particular task in one spot by:

- grouping readings by the ideas they support

- giving you a birds eye view of stuff you have & highlights what you haven’t got (& still need)

- records all pertinent details for each source

2. Collect evidence relevant to your task by:

- extracting relevant bits from each reading

- linking them to what you want to say on the topic

- record details for each source
