Exhibit Omeka S

Exhibit is the University's Omeka S online exhibition platform for showcasing our digital collections and research.

Obtaining Copyright Permission

Site Curators are responsible for identifying copyright and obtaining the copyright owner's declaration and licence to include copyright material in their Exhibit Omeka S site.

The University of Tasmania Copyright management in your research guide provides general information to manage research copyright, including obtaining permission from copyright owners.

Copyright tool Risk level Explanation
Sample permission letter medium risk Personal correspondence. Letter includes legal terminology but relies on the copyright owner declaration being correct. Standard method researchers use to approach potential copyright owners. There is risk that the responder is unaware of third party copyright material in their work and they are providing a declaration and licence for materials they do not own.
Licence to Digitise and Publish low risk

Formal plain-English licence, which provides the copyright owner with detailed information about the licence and declaration they are signing. Not witnessed and signed by all parties.

Licence Deed to Digitise and Publish very low -  no risk

Formal legal deed agreement between the University and copyright owner.

A deed has the least risk to the University as is completely binding. Please contact the University Copyright Officer. or University Legal Officer to discuss and obtain.

Item Copyright Declarations May Need to Be Sought From:

  • the creator(s) of a work, or person(s) that own the copyright to the work  
  • a non-UTAS staff photographer taking the digital images of the work 
  • owners of the exhibition or private space displaying the work(s)
  • owners of work/members of the public that are included in a digital image
 
Include a Copyright Statement in Exhibit Omeka S Item Metadata

A copyright attribution statement must be included in the resource template Rights element for each new Item or media object added to the Exhibit Omeka S platform. See Add Items in the Exhibit Omeka S User Guide.

 

Links to Third Party Website Material

Links within a Exhibit Omeka S curated site to third party website material must not infringe the third party website’s Copyright statement.  Website copyright statements can usually be found at the bottom of the website.

Media or images hosted on third party platforms such as YouTube or Flickr attract copyright and must only be embedded on a Exhibit Omeka S webpage if copyright allows. An attribution statement which includes the creator, date, source and licence details must appear underneath all embedded media.
