University Connections Program: What are Subject Guides?

Step 1 - Why use Subject Guides?

Subject Guides group key resources by subject

Use these guides to help you navigate through the assignment writing process.

Subject Guides are useful for:

  • Finding subject specific dictionaries and encyclopedias
  • Finding books on your subject, including ebooks
  • Finding the best databases that cover your subject
  • Finding journal articles
  • Referencing styles
  • Useful websites

Access the Subject Guides via the Library Homepage

then choose Subject Guides from list on the right, under My Account.

Step 2 - What are journals?

Module 1: Analyse the question > The three-step process > Step 1: Identifying keywords and alternative terms.

Journals are published periodically (like magazines) and contain articles of current research and commentary on a particular subject

Journals are also known as periodicals or serials

Journals at UTAS may be available electronically and/or in print

Comparative Literature Studies book

Peer reviewed journals are a great source of information for academic assignments.  This means the articles in the journal have passed a rigorous review process by experts in the field before they are published

Use the Subject Guides or Megasearch to help you find journal articles. For more information on using Megasearch, see the Megasearch Subject Guide.

Step 3 - Explore Subject Guides

Module 1: Analyse the question > The three-step process > Step 1: Identifying keywords and alternative terms.

Activity red arrow Explore the Subject Guides for the best guides for your subject.

It can be beneficial to look at more than one Subject Guide for some units studied at university.
