About Impact Data

Impact data may be

  • on publications and other research outputs of individuals, research groups or institutions
  • one factor in securing funding for further research and may be used by individuals to secure tenure or gain promotion
  • used by authors to quantify their own impact within or beyond a discipline, and by other researchers to identify competitors or collaborative opportunities within a field

Common measures of research output include the total number of papers, total number of citations, and the number of citations per paper. Each measure has advantages and disadvantages, related to discipline characteristics, inclusiveness of the measures, and the accessibility of the data.
