What is a peer-reviewed journal?
A peer reviewed journal (also known as a refereed journal) publishes articles that have been critically assessed by other scholars in the author's field.
Peer review is the accepted method for ensuring that information is of the highest quality.
A peer reviewed journal will have:
- a copy of a reviewer’s assessment relating to the article;
- a statement in the journal certifying that contributions are peer reviewed; or
- a statement by the journal editor certifying that contributions are peer reviewed.
If you don't have access to a copy of a journal and it is not listed in one of the indexes below visit the journal homepage to access the submission guidelines and other indications of status.

- Ulrich's Periodicals Directory A directory of journals within broad subject areas and specific disciplines, identifying peer-reviewed sources.
- Journal Citation Reports A source of quantitative data (Impact Factors) about journals, identifying those which are high impact within a subject grouping
- DEST Register of Refereed Journals*
This list contains the names of journals that have been assessed by the Department of Education, Science and Training as satisfying the refereeing requirements for the Higher Education Research Data Collection (HERDC).
